What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system. Other operating systems include Mac OS, (OS = Operating System) Windows 95 or 98 and Unix, just to name a few. Linux was developed in the early 1990's by Linus Trovalds, and is similar to the Unix operating system. It is the next generation in operating systems, and best of all, it's totally free. Because of this distinguishing factor, Linux users and computer systems running Linux are increasing at an impressive rate. Some of the notable and unique features that Linux OS holds over Windows and Macintosh:

Affordable

-- Free operating system and software
The Linux operating system and it's software is free and can be downloaded from the Internet

-- Free built-in help
The Linux operating system comes with an extensive built-in help feature called Man Pages

-- Runs on inexpensive hardware

Efficient

-- Requires less memory, processor power and can be run with a small amount of hard drive space -- Allows you to operate your home or work computer remotely

Stable

-- Run your Linux box up to a year without needing to reboot
